Juan Carlos I Abdicated. The run to be first

Only 10 minutes to change the Spanish history: four minutes of Mariano Rajoy and six minutes of the message of Jan Carlos I.

Today morning (June, 2nd 2014) is going to be an historical moment, not only for the spanish story, but also for media. At 10,30 am, The Primer Minister Mariano Rajoy called to all media to a “institutional declaration”. The first buzz pointed to possible changes in the government. Rapidly rumors are denied but the buzz say that it is going to be an important announced.

At 10:11 am the digital newspaper El Confidencial publishes the abdication of Juan Carlos I, King of Spain since 1976. One minute later, El Periódico, a catalan regional newspaper, tweet the same message in its Twitter account. Between 10h30 and 11h30 there were published 4,100 tweets with references to "Juan Carlos" and "abdicates".

Televisions, newspapers, radios and all media changes the agenda to cover the news conference. The main reason for this expectation would be because of the far distance between Rajoy and press. Finally, the Prime Minister confirmed the rumor which it was running through all spanish editorial offices: "I want to communicate the will of the King to renounce the throne and begin the process of succession".

At 1 p.m. the King talked to the nation to abdicate in favor of his son Felipe. Only six minutes to say thanks and goodbye to their citizens during the last 39 years. In addition, he talked about the great preparation of his son and the importance to have a new generation in front of the institution because of the social changes.

During all the morning, the spanish announce was trend topic over the world.

And there are several discussions about which one was first.

Some newspaper are working to launch evening edition with the news.

This is one of the most important days in the spanish young democracy. The coverage is in real time and it's going to be difficult to tell something new tomorrow. This is and important challenge and opportunity to newspapers to work in a real  landscape of multimedia convergence.
